Obit (1988) - Gwendolyn E. COCHRANE (nee KERR)

Nov. 7, 1988 Halifax Chronicle Herald:
COCHRANE, Gwendolyn E. - 89, Parrsboro, died Saturday at Hillcrest Manor, Truro.  Born in Fox River, Cumberland County, she was a daughter of the late Captain Robert and Anna B. (Hatfield) Kerr.  She attended Halifax Ladies College and was a member of Grace United Church, Port Greville, Pythian Sisters and Eastern Star.  She was active for many years in church and community work.  She is survived by a daughter, Muriel (Mrs. Leonard Nelson), Dartmouth; a son, Robert, Port Greville; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth; a daughter, Merle (Mrs. Frank Evans), an infant grandson.  The body is in Smith's Funeral Home, Parrsboro, where visiting will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday.  Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Grace United Church, Port Greville, Rev. Elaine Palmer and Rt. Rev. L.F. Hatfield officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to Grace United Church,
Port Greville.

PARRSBORO - Kenneth J. Cochrane, 85, of Parrsboro and Port Greville, died Monday in hospital in Truro.  Born in Fox River, Cumberland County, he was a son of the late G. Melville and Sadie (Soley) Cochrane.  He took over his father's shipbuilding business.  When wooden ships declined, he studied business education in Belleville, Ont.  He worked for the Imperial Bank of Commerce in Nova Scotia.  During that career, he studied civil engineering through ICS, and then became Cumberland County civil engineer.  He served as a Member of Parliament in MacKenzie King's government from 1935-39.  He was a Member of the Legislature in Nova Scotia under Angus L. MacDonald from 1940-49.  He also served as Cumberland County councillor for two terms.  He was a member of Port Greville Knights of Pythias Lodge and Parrsboro Masonic Lodge and was an honorary life member of both lodges.  He was a choir member of Grace United Church and a superintendent of Sunday
School.

He is survived by his wife, the former Gwendelyn Kerr, a daughter, Muriel (Mrs. Leonard Nelson), Dartmouth; a son, Robert, Brookfield; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  He was predeceased by a daughter, Merle (Mrs. Frank Evans), a grandson, a brother, Chesley, and a sister, Mrs. Eva Witmore.  The body is in Smith's Funeral Home, Parrsboro where the Knights of Pythias and the Masonic Lodge will hold a memorial service 7 p.m. Wednesday.  Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Grace United Church, Port Greville, Rev. Bradley Little officiating, with burial in church cemetery.  Memorials may be made to Grace United Church Memorial Fund.
