INVESTIGATION HELD INTO DEATH OF WILLIAM ST. PETERS
Amherst Man Dies From Burns Received When Boiler at D.A. Casey's Store.
Explosion is Declared Accidental

Major burns received by William St. Peters on Thursday last proved fatal and
the local citizen died on Sunday morning in Highland View Hospital. St.
Peters who was employed with D.A. Casey in the manufacturing establishment
on Victoria Street, was literally covered with scalding water and steam when
a furnace boiler burst in the basement of the Casey premises. Mr. St. Peters
was at once rushed to Highland View Hospital, but owing to the nature and
the extent of his burns little hope even then was held for his recovery.
Although ne inquest was held, Dr. Henry Myers as coroner conducted an
investigation with local police into the cause of the fatal event. It was
ascertained that the bursting of the furnace boiler was entirely accidental.

Gordon Goodwin, a local plumber made a statement at the informal inquiry to
the effect that an automatic valve in the furnace had apparently stuck.
Normally this valve would permit the over heated water to run into the
sewer. The furnace had been installed new three years ago.

St. Peters was working in the basement of the store at the time. He was
engaged in mixing cold water paint. The blast from the furnace came without
warning and St. Peters received the scalding water over his legs and body.
Regarding the actual accident, Dr. Myers took statements from other
employees of the Casey firm who were in the building at the time of the
accident.

St. Peters was a part-time employee of the Casey concern and generally
reported at the noon hour to engage in work around the plant. He was
forty-one years of age and was the son of the late John St. Peters. He is
survived by his wife who was formerly Miss Jennie Casey of Amherst; three
daughters, Phyllis 13, Dorothy 12 and Theresa 9 and one son, Gary 3.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday morning from St. Charles Church at
nine o'clock.
