Cyril Hoeg
With heartfelt sadness, we
regret to announce the passing of Cyril Hoeg, 80, of Alder Point, on Friday,
Aug. 24, 2012, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Alder Point,
he was the son of the late Walter and Ruth (Boutilier) Hoeg. Devco played a big
part in Papa’s life. He mined coal for 33 years, always coming home telling
stories about him and the boys, and the good times they had at work. Anyone who
knew Papa knew there were three things that meant the world to him: family,
work and camping. Every year when May would arrive, he would spend all week
cleaning and shining his baby (1980 Chevy van), getting it ready for the May
24th weekend. Three camping spots that held a special place in Papa’s heart
were Corney Brook, Broad Cove and in his later years, the Highlands.
Papa was a very active man. He could always be found on the Prince Mine Road, walking 2.5 km, waving
to all the truckers as they passed by. He hauled all his own coal and wood home
until he was 79. Papa is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 60 years,
Rose ‘Sis’ Bonnar; sons, Blair, Ontario, Gary (Colleen), Alder Point, Greg
(Kim), Fort McMurray, Kenny (Gail), Wreck Cove, and Nicky, Alder Point;
daughters, Diane (John) Hall, Ontario, Cathy Timbury, Alder Point, Christina
Sheffield, Sydney Mines, and Tanya (Michael) O’Toole, Sydney Mines; sister,
Marlyn (Adrian) White, Florence; special nephew, Tommy Clarke; and his little
dog, Pebbles; 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Besides his parents,
he was predeceased by his daughter Marlyn, grandson, Matthew, sisters, Verna (George)
Clarke and Eileen, brothers, Spurgeon (Marguerite), Vincent, nieces, Donna and
Darlene, nephew, Jed, daughter-in-law, May and son-in-law, Jack Sheffield. Visitation
for Cyril Hoeg will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St.,
Sydney Mines, today (Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A
celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home
chapel, with Rev. David Hopper officiating. A reception will be held in the Florence legion, after
the funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations in Cyril’s memory may be made to the
cancer society, or the palliative care society. Words of comfort may be sent to
the family at
