OBITUARY: John David Betts
The death of John David Betts, well known coal mining official, occurred at
Highland View Hospital Saturday night. A resident of River Hebert, Mr. Betts
had been in ill health for the past year but only in serious condition for
the past few days. He was 77 years of age, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs.
David Betts of River Hebert. He was born in Stellarton but had resided in
the River Hebert Joggins area for the greater part of his life, where he was
well known and highly respected. He had been a mine manager for over 50
years and during his career he opened and managed Maple Leaf Mine No. 1 and
was manager of the mine at Fenwick, which opened in 1919. For a few years he
managed the Beaver Mine in Glace Bay from which he retired eight years ago.
He was a member of and held all offices in the Orange Lodge, joining in
Joggins. He is survived by his wife, the former Jessie Lamb of Joggins;
three daughters, Helen, Mrs. Garvin Wolfe, Beaver Mines, C.B.; Irene, Mrs.
John Green, Pictou; Mamie, Mrs. Allen Carmichael, Truro; two sons, James,
Beaver Mines; and Jack, at home; one sister, Miss Elvina Betts, Berkley,
Calif.; three brothers, Graham, River Hebert; George, Springhill; and
Leonard, Beaver Mines. The remains are resting at the home, River Hebert,
from where the funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.
