OBITUARY: William H. Gilbert
The death occurred on Thursday afternoon, June 9th of William H. Gilbert,
Lakelands, at the age of 79 years. The late Mr. Gilbert had been in poor
health for some time past but had not been considered serious until about
five months ago, and while that time passed, his death was not unexpected,
it came as a great shock to his family. The deceased who had been born at
Lakelands and had lived his life there, had a wide circle of friends
throughout the countryside, all of whom will learn of his death with sincere
regret. Up until his health began to fail, he lived on the old homestead,
moving then to the home of his son, Thompson, where he passed away. He was a
faithful member of the Methodist Church, always attentive at it's services
when health allowed. The late Mr. Gilbert is survived by his widow, formerly
Miss Jane Taylor, daughter of the late Silas Taylor, Five Islands; three
daughters, Mrs. May Alkern, Marysville, N.B.; Mrs. A.H. Schurman and Mrs.
John Redhead, both of Amherst; also three sons, Silas in the West; Melvine
in Bass River; and Thompson at home. A daughter, Mrs. George DeMille
predeceased him about 24 years ago. Eighteen grandchildren and five great
grandchildren also survive; and one brother, James of Lakelands. The funeral
was held on Saturday afternoon, interment in the Methodist Cemetery,
Parrsboro. The services at the home and grave were conducted by the Rev. A.
Daniel. A large number attended and the hymns: "Asleep In Jesus", "Meet Me
There" and "Jesus Savior Pilot Me" were feelingly rendered, all favorites of
the deceased. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, testifying to the
high regard held for the late Mr. Gilbert.
