OBITUARY: John W. Brodrick
In the death of John W. Brodrick which occurred at Parrsboro last night,
there has passed away one of the best known men in Cumberland County. The
late Mr. Brodrick was seventy years old. Death came after a long illness.
Born at Five Islands in the year 1851, the deceased has spent nearly his
whole life in this part of the county where he has built and conducted large
hotels at Five Islands, Parrsboro Beach and Parrsboro which in turn were
known far and wide for the true Brodrick hospitality which they dispensed.
His first wife was formerly Ella Thompson of Maine, and from this union, one
son, Fred of Bass River survives. Some years later he married Margaret
Thompson of Five Islands. The children surviving this marriage are Frank,
the present proprietor of Brodrick's Hotel, Parrsboro; Mellie, now Mrs.
Oscar Carleton of Sussex, N.B.; Julia of Boston; and Jane, now Mrs. W.H.
Barry. His third wife was Nellie Lowther, daughter of John Wesley Lowther of
Nappan, the children from the third union being Lucian and Joseph of Five
Islands; and John at school in Truro. The remains will be conveyed to Five
Islands this afternoon and the funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Mr.
Cooke of Parrsboro tomorrow afternoon.
