DICK, Gordon Alexander (Sandy) - Master Mechanic - Passed away peacefully on Thursday July 6, 2006 in his room at the Southwind Retirement Residence. He was 81. Sandy was predeceased by his loving wife Dorothy (McAloney) and leaves behind his two sons Michael (Newmarket) and Lloyd (Edmonton) and their wives Ingrid and Andrea. A loving grandfather for Kenneth, Wynne, and James who will be missed on their regular phone calls. Sandy was born and raised in Springhill, Nova Scotia and worked as a mechanic in the coal mines until the disasters of '56 and '58 closed the mines. He then moved his family including his parents, to Sudbury, Ontario in the winter of '58. Many evenings in the 60's were spent upgrading his skills and we always celebrated when he received good marks on his tests and earned the title of Master Mechanic at Falconbridge Nickel Mines. As a hobby in the 70's and 80's, despite his colour-blindness, he produced many fine pieces of petit point that are treasured by all those who have one in their possession. Retirement came in 1986 and with it Sandy had more time to pursue his interest in golf and computers, along with the responsibilities of looking after Callaghan (his Irish setter). Health issues raised their ugly head in the mid 90's and then the untimely passing of his devoted partner in life took a lot of wind out of his sails. He persevered and continued to be an active part of a wonderful St. Stephen's on the Hill community. Recently he had found many new friends and reacquainted with some old friends at Southwind. Dad you have many golfing friends in Heaven, Ivan, Remi & Jack are waiting for a game. The tee deck is yours. Enjoy! Friends may visit at the JACKSON AND BARNARD FUNERAL HOME, 233 Larch Street, Sudbury on Monday, July 10th, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. Stephen's on the Hill United Church, 1248 Lauzon Street, Sudbury on Tuesday July 11, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. Cremation at the Park Lawn Crematorium. For those who wish donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated Sudbury Star - Saturday, July 8, 2006 <
