OBITUARY: Mrs. J. Horatio Johns
Springhill, July 3 (Special) Many friends throughout the county will learn
with regret of the death of Hattie, wife of J. Horatio Johns at her home on
the Black River Road, Thursday, July1st, following a lingering illness. She
was born at Folly Lake in 1874 and was the former Hattie George, daughter of
the late James George and Mrs. Ivan (George) Slack of Folly Lake. She was a
member of Wesley United Church, and when her health permitted, was a
faithful attendant. She was twice married. Her first husband, Ezra Slack was
killed by lighting in the summer of 1906, when standing on the steps of the
Orange Hall building on the Herrett Road, where he had taken shelter from
the storm. Surviving are her husband and two daughters, Bertha (Mrs. John
MacPherson), Myrtle (Mrs. Hedley Ripley) and two sons, Ezra Slack and Fred
Johns, all of Springhill. Also surviving is a sister, Elizabeth (Mrs. George
Small) of Wyndham [sic]; and two half-sisters, Margaret (Mrs. James Donkin)
of Truro; Elsie (Mrs. John Bailey [sic] of East Mountain; and five
half-brothers, Warren Slack of Saskatchewan; Alvord Slack of Londonderry;
Trueman and Suther Slack of Folly Lake; and Orland Slack of Westchester.The
funeral will be held from her late residence Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
The Rev. William T. Mercer of Wesley United Church will conduct the service.
Interment will be in the Rodney Cemetery.
