Obit: HICKS, Mary Theresa [née BURKE]

Mary Hicks (August 27, 1923 - September 28, 2011)
It is with sadness that we announce the death of Mary Theresa Hicks (nee
Burke), 88 years old, on September 28th, 2011 at the Cumberland Regional
Health Care Centre. She was born in Joggins on August 27, 1923 to the
late Simon and Helen (nee Robinson) Burke. Mary was married for many
years to David but he has been sadly missed these 28 years. During her
time, she was a great communicator and used every type of device
available - telephone, CB, letters, cards and of course, in person. She
was an animal lover who loved all types of pets and even a few farm
animals. She was known for taking in unwanted pets and gave them a
loving home. She loved to cook and was good at it. She was known for her
fry-dogs and homemade bread. As with all great cooks, she cooked by feel
and did not use a recipe. This is our loss. She enjoyed bingo but had
not played for many years. Her family was always her priority and she
put them above herself. She was pre deceased by her brothers Wilfred and
six young babies (Victor, Cecil, Harvey, George, Darrell and Charles) as
well as two children Robert and David. She is survived by her sister
Josephine (Buddy) MacDonald of Amherst, her sister in law Anna of Sydney
and her brother Henry (Faye) of Wallace, children Diane (Carl) Lirette
of Amherst and Wayne and his partner Tina Carroll of Maccan. Her
grandchildren Craig (Tammy) and Tanya (John Mill) and great
grandchildren Austin, Tamara (McKinnon), Brandon and Destiny, all from
River Hebert. There are many cousins, nieces and nephews who will miss
her as well. At her request, there is no service. She has been cremated
by Campbell's Funeral Home, Amherst (667-9906) and her ashes will be
buried alongside David in the Amherst Cemetery at a later date.
Donations to the Lillian Albion Animal Shelter of Amherst NS would be
appreciated. Special thanks to the staff from the hospital for looking
after her when we could not. On line condolences may be forwarded to her
family via: www.campbellsamherst.ca
