Supporting your thoughts (that Kenneth Shirley Atkinson was the son of George & Evelyn), here are two obituaries (Ruth Beardsley, nee Atkinson & Muriel Fette, nee Atkinson) - both listing a deceased  brother Shirley.

BEARDSLEY, Ruth Arabella - 66, River Hebert, died September 15, 1995, in Highland View Regional Hospital, Amherst. Born in Advocate, she was a daughter of the late George and Evelyn (Shirley) Atkinson. She was a member of Amherst and Brookside Curling clubs and the UCW of Trinity United Church. Surviving are a daughter, Nancy (Mrs. Alan Smith), Dartmouth; sons, Larry, Maccan; Robert, River Hebert; sisters, Ardis Sheffield, Aylesford; Carman Oulton, LeMesa, Calif.; Muriel Fette, Bokeelia, Fla.; Meredith Crossman, Brockville, Ont.; brothers, Willis, Brockville; Ronald, Toronto; four grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Freeman; sisters, Marguerite Canning, Ruby Trerise; ***brother, Shirley***. Funeral 2 p.m. today in Trinity United Church, River Hebert, Rev. Danny Compton and Rev. Bob Mack officiating. Burial to follow in Hillside Cemetery. Donations to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Arrangements under the direction of Campbell's

Dec 10, 1998 Halifax Chronicle Herald:FETTE, Muriel Pearl - 73, died December 7, 1998, in the Rehab Centre, Orlando, Fla. Born in Apple River, Cumberland Co., she was a daughter of the late George and Evelyn (Shirley) Atkinson. She graduated from Grace Maternity Hospital, Halifax, and did nursing in Nova Scotia and Ontario. Surviving are her husband, John, Orlando; sister, Ardis (Mrs. Merrill Sheffield), New Minas; Carmen (Mrs. Ray Oulton), Los Angeles; brothers, Ronald, Toronto; Willis, Brockville, Ont.; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sister, Marguerite (Mrs. Kenneth Canning), Meredith (Mrs. Frederick Crossman), Ruby (Mrs. Edward Trerise), Ruth (Mrs. Freeman Beardsley); ***brother, Shirley***. Cremation has taken place. Burial at a later date.

Hi David,

I think Kenneth Shirley Atkinson is the son of George H Atkinson and Evelyn Davidson Shirley, who were married Dec 13, 1916 in Apple River, N S and had a family of at least 10 children. The mother, Evelyn , I believe, died in 1967 but don't have an obituary.
Why Kenneth would name his parents as William and Martha Atkinson is a mystery.

rather than a grandson. Neither of the grand parent's obits mention a son,
Kenneth Shirley Atkinson.
