Obit: THORPE, Jean Graham

Thorpe, Jean Graham - Beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away
on September 20, 2011, in Dartmouth. Born in Fox River, Cumberland Co.,
on April 27, 1921, Jean was the daughter of Vivian and James Graham. She
graduated in 1944 as a Registered Nurse and worked in the communities of
Port Greville, Shelburne and Halifax, and as a 2nd Lieutenant (Nursing
Sister) in the Second World War. Both during her working years and in
her retirement, Jean was well-known for her community volunteer
involvement and received many awards for her dedication to others,
including the Halifax YWCA Recognition of Women Award, the Canadian
Cancer Society Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Commemorative Medal
of Confederation of Canada "significant contribution to compatriots,
community, and Canada". She was a fiercely avid bridge player and played
with friends, her Bridge Club and for charity events. Jean will be
deeply missed by her husband of 64 years, William "Bill" Thorp, son, Jim
and his wife Jackie of Edmonton; daughter, Susan and partner David
Hatcher of Dartmouth; daughter, , Nancy of Musquodoboit Harbour;
grandchildren, Bailey (Tim) Sousa of Edmonton with daughter Avriella;
Elliott (Leah Genge) of Calgary, and Amelia of Musquodoboit Harbour. A
celebration of Jean's life will be held in Christ Church, Dartmouth on
Saturday, September 24 at 2 p.m. Private graveside service will be held
at a later date in Scott's Bay and Port Greville. Donations in Jean's
memory may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.
