D. MACGILLIVARY DIES FROM KNIFE WOUNDS
Donald MacGillivary, 27, of Spencer's Island, died in All Saint's Hospital
about 10: a.m. Sunday morning from a knife wound inflicted in the home of
Mrs. Rowena Bernard, Main Street, about 4 p.m. The same morning, Mrs.
Shirley Perrin, 19, the mother of two children, was arrested following the
incident, interrogated by the local police, and taken to the county jail. On
Monday, Mrs. Perrin appeared before Judge Thomas Giles, charged with
non-capital murder, and was sent to the Nova Scotia Hospital for observation
for a period of thirty days.
At the time of the incident, about 4 a.m., John Henderson and Donald Wheaton
were standing on the steps of a nearby store when they heard two screeches.
Moments later a young boy dashed out of the alleyway leading to an upstairs
apartment and asked them if there was a policeman around. They said they had
not seen one and the boy ran down the Main Street a short distance when he
saw a police car approaching. He stopped the car, which was driven by
Constable Pete Garnet, R.C.M.P. The officer proceeded to the apartment and
Mr. Wheaton said they saw him return with a knife which he put in the back
seat of his car. Three other young men came along in a car and the Mountie
asked them to get Sgt. Sammy MacDonald. The Mountie returned to the
apartment and was later joined by Sgt. MacDonald who asked the three boys to
get a doctor. Dr. Arnold Burden arrived on the scene. Later Sgt. MacDonald
sent the three young men for Tabor's ambulance. When the ambulance arrived,
Sgt. MacDonald, Cst. Garnet and John Henderson carried a man down the
stairs, placed him on a stretcher and the ambulance proceeded to All Saint's
Hospital.
DIES IN HOSPITAL
Despite all that could be done for him, MacGillivary passed away about 10
a.m. The body was taken to Amherst where an autopsy was held.
INVESTIGATE
During Monday R.C.M.P. Officers from Truro took part in the investigation.
