HARRY PEARSON IS DROWNED
Topples From Speed Boat Into Shortt's Lake
Harry C. Pearson, 30 resident of 2 Munroe Street, was drowned at Shortt's
Lake yesterday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The tragic accident occurred a short
distance off shore in front of Harry MacKenzie's cottage when Pearson, who
was a passenger in a small motorboat owned and driven by Manes MacKay, made
an abrupt turn and Pearson was plunged into the water. It is believed he
fell directly under the boat and was struck by the propellor of the craft,
as a piece of the clothing worn by the victim was later found on the
propellor blades.
Body Still Missing
The body had not been found up to noon today. Constable E.J. Cassidy of the
Truro Detachment RCMP, who was spending the afternoon there, immediately
took over the search for the victim's body, and is supervising the continued
search today. Members of the Fire Brigade, cottage owners, and others from
Truro set to work immediately after the accident, dragging the lake bottom
in an effort to recover the body. The accident happened in plain view of
some persons on the shore of the lake and was witnessed by one young lady
who stated that the victim had toppled from the side of the boat and
completely disappeared. Johnny and Harold McKenzie, who were at their
father's cottage, dived a number of times, but were unable to locate the
body. Pearson was the son of Daniel Pearson and the late Mrs. Helen Pearson.
He was born and lived all his life in Truro. He was a member of First United
Church and the Truro Fire Brigade. He was employed at Brookfield Creamery
Limited, Truro. Surviving are his wife, the former Melita Rector, and their
daughter, nine-year old Betty Lou. Surviving also are his father and
