Harry D. Canning - The death of Harry Dunlop Canning of Ward's Brook,
Cumb. Co., occurred suddenly on Wednesday, October 31st. Born in Ward's
Brook in 1873, he was the last surviving member of the family of William
and Caroline Pettis Canning. Despite his advanced age, Mr. Canning
retained his love of outdoor life and was at his hunting camp near North
Greville, in company with his son Herbert W. Canning, when he became ill
on Wednesday. He passed away when enroute by ambulance to the hospital.
He is survived by his widow, the former Lavinia Webster, and by two
sons, Herbert W. Canning of Parrsboro, and Clarence Canning of
Vancouver. Also by several grandchildren. Funeral services were held on
Saturday afternoon at 2:30 at the Anglican Church in Fox River. The
service was conducted by Canon Moffatt. Hymns were "Unto the Hills"
and Rock of Ages". The deceased was a life-member of the Knights of
Pythias Lodge. The Knights were in attendance and after interment,
officiated at the grave with their committal service. Pallbearers were
Brother Knights: Herbert Murphy, Loring Kerr, Blair Graham, Hardy
Benjamin, Roland Allen and Otto Hatfield. Floral tributes were many and
beautiful. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr.
Burton Conrad, of Halifax; Mrs. Maynard Brown and baby daughter, also of
Halifax, who were guests at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. W.
Canning; also Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Canning and daughter Carol of
Seabright.
