STRUCK BY PROP; DIES IN HOSPITAL
Without having regained consciousness, Orrin Fowler, 30 year-old-son of Mr.
Edward Fowler, passed away at All Saint's Hospital this morning as a result
of an accident in No. 2 mine on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. At the time of the
accident, Mr. Fowler was working in the 7100 wall when a light of coal left
the face suddenly. striking a prop which hit him on the head, fracturing his
skull. There was little coal moving at the time and the injured man was
rushed to the surface and the hospital with little delay. He failed to
respond to treatment and passed away this morning at 2:30. The late Mr.
Fowler is survived by two children - Shirley, aged 7 and Donald, aged 10
years. His wife, who before her marriage was Miss Bertina Johnson, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Johnson, predeceased him 3 years ago. He is also
survived by his father, Mr. Edward Fowler; one sister, Ellen; and three
brothers, Justin, Lawson and Allan, who was working in the same wall at the
time of the accident. The funeral will be held at 2:30 o'clock on Friday
afternoon from his father's residence on Lisgar Street.

OBITUARY: Orrin Legrow Fowler
The funeral of the late Orrin Legrow Fowler, who died at All Saint's
Hospital Wednesday, October 23rd, following an accident in the mine the
previous day by a falling prop, was held from the home of his father, Edward
Fowler, Lisgar Street, Friday afternoon at 2:30. Rev. H.S.B. Strothard of
Wesley United Church had charge of the service, assisted by Rev. J.R. Millar
of Saint Andrew's United Church. The late Orrin Fowler was born in Parrsboro
and was thirty years of age. He was brought to Springhill by his parents
when he was about nine years of age. His mother predeceased him some two
years ago. All his life had been spent here where he married Miss Bertina
Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Johnson, who passed away some
three years ago. He leaves to mourn his loss, two children, Donald, age 10
and Shirley age 7; his father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Fowler;
three brothers, Justin, Allan and Lawson; two sisters, Helen and Vivian; to
all of whom the sympathy of the community is extended to the untimely
passing of their loved one. The funeral service was an impressive one,
members of the United Mine Workers of America, to which organization the
deceased belonged, turned out in a body and marched to the cemetery headed
by the Canadian Legion Band. Interment was made in Hillside Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Messrs Howard Finlay, Merrill Murphy, James Ellsworth,
David Gillis, John Hannah and Harry Stubbert. Following the regular service
at the graveside by the officiating minister, Mr. Frank Hollis, President of
Local 4514 of the U.M.W. of A. read the service of the miner's own
organization. Though quiet and unassuming in nature, the late Mr. Fowler had
a host of friends who sympathize with the bereaved family in their great
loss.

OBITUARY - Mrs. Orren Fowler
The death occurred at an early hour Thursday morning, December 29th, at her
home, McFarlane Street, of Bertina Mae, wife of Orren Fowler, and daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Johnson, at the early age of 29 years. She was born in
Springhill. She had borne a long and trying illness of four years with an
enduring patience and great courage. In fact, it may be said she did not
surrender until the last day, when for a time she rested as usual, sitting
in her chair, holding out against the ravages of tuberculosis. Besides her
husband and parents, she leaves two small children, Donald, seven, and
Shirley, four. There remain also to mourn the loss of a sister gone before,
two brothers and two sisters; Earl, Harold and Devana (Mrs. Phil Ryan) and
Mrs. Ina McFarlane, Provincetown, Mass. The funeral was held on Saturday,
New Year's Eve, from her home, the service being conducted by Rev. W.J.
Wright, of Wesley United Church, assisted by Captain Lynch of the Salvation
Army and Wesley Choir. The hymns were the old favorites: "Rock Of Ages",
"Lead Kindly Light" and "Abide With Me". Interment was at Hillside Cemetery,
the pall bearers, representing the K. of P., being as follows: Monson
Legrow, Otis Nelson, David Morris, Earl Welton.

FOWLER, Donald Earl 83, Yarmouth, passed away at the Yarmouth Hospital, on
Friday, November 28, 2008. Born Sept. 19, 1925 in Springhill, he was the son
of the late Orrin and Bertina Mae Fowler. Donald's varied career began at
the Cumberland Railway and Coal Company in Springhill. Determined to
continue his education, he would study nights and weekends until he became
one of the first persons in the province to obtain a First Class Stationary
Engineer Certificate. He also taught engineering students at "night school"
and tutored many stationary engineer students. In 1957, Don and his family
moved to Sackville, N.B. where he was employed as a shift engineer in the
power plant at Mount Allison University. His final move with his family was
in 1961 to Yarmouth, N.S., where he began his position of Director of
Engineering for the Yarmouth Hospital. In his 27 years there, Donald's
responsibilities increased as the hospital expanded to include a new nursing
school, Tidal View Manor, Harbour Side Lodge, and the Diagnostic Centre. He
retired from the Yarmouth Regional Hospital in 1988. Donald enjoyed
community participation over the years and he shared his expertise as a
board member of the YMCA, as chair of the Building Committee for the YMCA
Centennial Pool, and on the advisory board of the Villa St. Joseph Du Lac.
He was a member of Beacon United Church. He achieved a lifetime membership
in the Yarmouth Lions Club. Donald is survived by his wife Kathleen
(Winters) with whom he shared 65 years of life. She was the
love of his life and he always credited her with any successes they shared.
He is also survived by his son, Michael (Olga) and daughter, Sandra (William
Foster), seven grandchildren Jenny, Sarah, Lila (Derek), Brian (Karen),
Colin, Jillian and David, and one great grandchild, Claire. His family share
lots of warm memories of "Grampy Don" and we will miss him in our lives. A
memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Tuesday, December 2nd at
2 pm from Sweenys Funeral Chapel, Yarmouth. Rev. A.D. Bill Newell
officiating. Spring internment will be in the Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery.
