C. Gordon Smith 1931-2011
*Gordon Smith*, 79, of Springhill, passed away peacefully at the
Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Tuesday, January 25, 2011.
Born in Springhill, he was a son of the late Arlie and Lois Smith.
Gordon was very dedicated to his work with the Department of
Transportation. He loved spending his summers at his cottage at
Cameron's Beach. An avid sports fan, Gordon loved watching every game
he could. He will be sadly missed by his wife Joyce MacCallum,
Springhill; children Jackie (Alan), Lois (Les), Paul (Louann), Ricky
(Teresa), Nan (Gerry) and Jeff (Bonnie); grandchildren Erin, Katlynn,
Mallory, Sarah, Emily, Gerry, Brittany, and Tiffany; 3 great
grandchildren; siblings Trudy (Jim), Floyd (Ruth) and Linda (Doug) and
his mother Annie Smith. He was predeceased by siblings Percy, Gerald
and Catherine. Arrangements have been entrusted to the A H Brown
Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane St., Springhill, NS (902-597-2167) where
visiting hours will take place on Friday from 7 to 9 pm. The funeral
service will take place at the funeral home on Saturday, January 29,
2011 at 2 pm. Burial will take place in the Hillside Cemetery in the

SMITH, Arlington Gordon (Arlie) - 94, 43 Church St., Springhill, died
August 24, 1998, in Highland View Regional Hospital, Amherst. Born in
Windham Hill, Cumberland Co., he was a son of the late Eric Alfred and
Gertude (Schurman) Smith. He was a member of Cumberland Lodge 5, Knights
of Phythias, where he held a Degree of the Golden Spur and was a past
chancellor. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, gardening, dancing
and he enjoyed his family and children. Surviving are his wife, the
former Annie Beryl Smith; sons, Floyd, Eastern Passage, Halifax Co.;
Gordon, Springhill; adopted son, Ricky, Calgary; daughters, Linda (Mrs.
Douglas Hill), Calgary; Gertrude (Mrs. James Cull), New Waterford;
half-brother, Curry Smith, Springhill Junction; half-sister, Beryl (Mrs.
James Murray), Springhill; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grand- children;
two great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, the
former Lois Colburne; daughter, Catherine in infancy; sons, Percy,
Gerald in infancy; brothers, Ronald, Cecil, Ottie; half-brothers,
Lester, George, Oscar; sisters, Hazel, Essie; half-sister, Jean.
Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in A.H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill.
Funeral 2 p.m. Thursday in St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church,
Springhill, Rev. Elroy McKillop officiating. Burial in Rodney Cemetery,
Cumberland County. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Andrew's-Wesley
United Church, Springhill, or any charity.

I had deduced (obviously wrongly) from Arlie's obit that Lois had died
sometime before he had married Annie, say 1937. However, Gordon's obit
says that Annie was **his mother** and Gordon was born in 1931 so there
must've been a divorce from Lois earlier, say 1929-30, and Arlie married
Annie circa 1930-31.

Any thoughts out there?
