George W. Chambers 1916-2011
*George W. Chambers*, age 94, of Sackville, passed away peacefully at
the Sackville Memorial Hospital on Friday, January 7, 2011. Born in
Amherst, NS, he was a son of the late William G and Anna E. (Donaldson)
Chambers. George had a more than 30 year management career at Enamel and
Heating (Fawcett Foundry) retiring in 1978. His community involvement
was very extensive, spanning such things as Town Council, the Hospital
Board, District Commissioner, Boy Scouts, Rotary and the Kinsmen. A
lifetime of athletic pursuit and achievements, he excelled at baseball,
basketball, football, hockey, curling and golf among others. He was an
honoree of the Sackville Sports Wall of Fame and a lifetime member of
Sackville's Curling and Golf Clubs. Active in the Scouting movement for
more than 80 years as a leader, workshop presenter, and District
Commissioner, he received the Boy Scout Association's highest award, the
Silver Wolf Award, from Governor General Romeo Leblanc in 1998.
He was an active musician from high school until his mid-forties
including Mount Allison's Mountaires and the George Chambers Orchestra
dance band. He was an avid bird hunter, fisherman and outdoor
enthusiast. He will be sadly missed by his sons, Chris and David
(Nancy), both of Sackville, 4 grandchildren, Keltie, Matthew, Anne and
Robert and 3 great grandchildren, Cassidy, Nathan and Maxwell. He was
predeceased by his wife, the former Jean Maxwell, and both brothers John
and Harry. Cremation has taken place under the care and supervision of
the Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge St., Sackville, NB (364-1300), where a
Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2011.
Visitation will take place from 12:30 until 2 pm followed immediately by
the Celebration at 2 pm. Burial will take place in the Sackville
Cemetery in the spring. Those wishing to make a donation in George's
