Harry "Skip" Porter 1940-2011
River Hebert - Family and Friends are sad to say farewell to Harry
"Skip" Porter who passed away on January 3rd, 2011. Born on Sept 18,
1940 he was the only son of the late Mary (Mamie) Porter, River Hebert.
Harry was born and lived in River Hebert all his life and was well known
by everyone in the community. He lived a simple life style of service to
others having cared for many. He loved music and was a great fan of
country western music, this passion increased his knowledge of many
famous singers and song writers. He loved to sing and whistle. He never
took an art lesson but was able to create fun and beautiful drawings of
common characters. He saw beauty in the common every day things and
would capture that using coloured pencils. His art is his legacy to the
world. All art supplies were given to him by family and friends. Harry
gave his art away because he felt it was a gift to him to give to
others. His drawings can be found in many homes and were often gifts to
children. Harry Porter's art is a unique story of generosity at its
best. It was the wish of Harry that his art would be used to benefit
his favorite charities. The directors will establish "The Holy
Whistlian" art collections with details to be announced in the very near
future. He is survived by his Aunt Melba McLaughlin, cousins Frank and
Heather Wood, John Wood, Melba and Carl Meredith, David and Dorine Wood,
as well as many other cousins outside of the Maritimes. Harry was
predeceased by his mother Mary (Mamie) Porter, Uncles Charles, Jack and
James; Aunts Dorothy Wood, Laura Mosley, Rhona Halliday, and Ellen
Williamson. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of
Furlong Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst (902-667-8777). A
celebration of Harry's life will take place on Friday, January 7, 2011
at 2 pm at the River Hebert United Church. A graveside service will
take place in the spring. Special thanks and appreciation is extended to
the nurses, doctors and staff of the Cumberland Regional Health Care
Centre for their wonderful care and exceptional kindness. Those wishing
to make donations in Harry`s memory may do so to the Cancer Society or
