Carol Brenda Chapman 1947-2010
Teacher, Farmer, Mother, Wife
Carol died peacefully Saturday June 26th, 2010 with her husband, Gary, and her four children by her side. She faced her terminal diagnosis with poise and grace, inspiring all. Carol spent the last few weeks of her life surrounded by loved ones and embracing beauty in the everyday. Carol was born the youngest of nine children in Windham Hill. In partnership with her husband, she took over the family blueberry farm and remained a farmer until the end. She was also a public school teacher for 37 years, most of which she spent at Springhill High School. Carol believed deeply in public education and saw the student in everyone. She obtained her teaching diploma from N.S. Teachers College. She later obtained her B.Ed. from Mt. Allison, and finally a Masters of Education from St. Mary's University. She later returned to her alma mater and taught in the education department at Mt. Allison University. Carol had a pragmatic spirit and gracefully faced the many challenges of being a mother, woman and feminist of her time. Carol loved literature, was an avid quilter and enjoyed the fine arts. She was very active in her local community. Carol was a member of the local chapter of Zonta as well as the Cumberland Quilter's Guild. Predeceased by her parents, Hedwig and Gustav Graf. Survived by her husband of 42 years, Gary, her four children, Pilar (Paul Pender), Regan (Daniel Belliveau), Robb (Julie Chiasson) and Garity. She is survived by all of her siblings: Audrey, Gladys, Harry, Greta, Walter, Carmen, Gordon, and Verna. Her spirit lives on through her grandchildren: Jamal, Finn, Reuben, Mia and Esmee. Visitation will be held at Brown's Funeral Home, Springhill on Tuesday June 29th, 6-8 p.m. Funeral to follow on Wednesday June 30th at 2 p.m. at the St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in Carol's memory may do so to the Cumberland County Transition House Association or the Cumberland County Palliative Care Fund.
