SUMMERS, Kenneth Tavender - Oxford, passed away at the age of 90 in High-Crest Nursing Home, Veterans Unit, Springhill, on Monday, January 25, 2010. He was born, January 23, 1920, to Charles and Rosa (Tavender) Summers. Ken was proud to have served in the Canadian Army overseas 1939 - 1945 in the 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade (Red Patch) Platoon, Sergeant Hasting Prince Edward Regiment. Ken was wounded three times. After coming home to Calgary, he worked at Canadian Western Gas Co. for 32 years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the Legion, Elks and Senior Citizens. He enjoyed many years of golf, bowling and playing cards. His home in Nova Scotia was a lot of fun with special friends from Dartmouth, coming to Oxford for a full day to visit and play cards. Ken loved his home very much. In younger days he traveled a lot but said many times that Nova Scotia was the best place to live. Ken and Chris were married in November 1994 and had a wonderful loving life for over 15 years. He was so welcomed by Christena's family. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren embraced him with open arms and were always there for him. Ken will be sadly missed by his loving wife, the former Christena Henwood; her children, Marlene (Eric) and Brian (Cathy); grandchildren, Karina, Craig, Matthew and Geoffrey, and great-grandchildren, Braedon, Julia, Evan and Nathan who worshipped their Grampie Ken. Ken was predeceased by his first wife, Florence with whom he had two daughters. Chris and family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of the Veterans' Unit at High-Crest Nursing Home for their wonderful compassionate care of Ken. Cremation has taken place under the direction of A. H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill. In keeping with Ken's wishes, there will be no visitation, service or flowers. Ashes to be buried at a later date. If so desired, donations in Ken's memory may be made High-Crest Nursing Home, Springhill, or a charity of choice. Loved forever and always.
