Subject: Re: [nscumber] daylight savings time in 1950-1970
Hi Bev:
Have you done any research around the Great Depression and early 30¹s
when
your grandfather would have been a teenager?
A large section of Port Greville buildings on the main road, both sides
of
the Shipyard Hill were destroyed by a huge fire. The Dr. Hill house that
once sit on our foundation (on Cochrane Road) was moved across the
field to
become what became known as Lloyd Ayer¹s home. The Wylie Cochrane home
that
was built nearby with no basement was then moved to the vacant Dr. Hill
foundation and my father purchased it about 1941. Were there any homes
in
Ward¹s Brook destroyed in a similar manner?
Then, there¹s the ³Proabition² in the area with several ³prominent² Port
Greville families involved in illegal alcohol (imitating a police
officer to
confiscate a load of alcohol in Halifax County, then bring it back to
the
area for sale. Then there¹s the stolen cars from the North Eastern
United
States whereby even the local minister got coned into buying one. The
R.C.M.P. confiscated it of course and he was out the $. Then there¹s
the big
robbery whereby Cecil Fletcher (one of the larger stores at the time in
the
area) was hit over the head, tied up and robbed of a large amount of
money.
I¹m sure this kind of activity spilled over into Ward¹s Brook and Fox
River
as well.
Sorry, I don¹t have these stories in detail but if one reads the old
Parrsboro Records from 1930 to 1934 in the Archives, they¹re all in
there.
As an amateur genealogist, I usually don¹t park this kind of data in a
person¹s file notes.
I remember my father telling me once that his father (a sawmill
stationery
engineer) was ³hired² to fire the boiler of a tug boat at Port Greville
Harbor one evening in the early 30¹s and in darkness, towed a scow
loaded
with cars out into the Minas Basin whereby these cars were all pushed
overboard. Reason, they were all ³hot² cars and the R.C.M.P. were
getting
too close. No evidence no convictions.
I personally remember as a youngster even late into the early 50¹s of
seeing
several local 2 to 3 ton trucks with a few unfastened floorboards in the
middle of the wooden body whereby there was a hidden cavity below
between
the truck¹s frame; alcohol, poached deer & moose etc. The owners just
backed
them into their garages / barns to load / unload with no one the wiser.
Back
then I never thought anymore about it as I would today.
After my father finished high school, his first winter was working back
in
the woods in Gesner Kerr¹s lumber mill whereby one stayed in camp all
winter. On a few weekends if things were slack, he and my grandfather
would
walk 6 to 8 hours out of the woods to their home in Fox River, sleep,
get a
bath, have Sunday dinner with my grandmother, then walk the 6 to 8 hours
back into the woods for Monday morning¹s shift. The second winter he
and my
grandfather worked in the woods down around Shulee way for Dr. Cochrane.
They walked home for the weekend to Fox River on the road with a sled;
walking up the hills pulling the sled and coasting down the hills to the
next hill. There were few cars traveling during the winter on the icy
roads.
After a few winters of that, he switched to carpentry. One has to
remember
this was during the Depression when jobs were hard to come by and times
were
tough.
Just some more ideas for your story.
