Hello Everyone,
During WW 2 I have been reading about where in 1940 an Air Detection corps
were initiated as many Canadians faced the possiblity that enemy aircraft
would enter the country's airspace. Unpaid civilians from coast to coast,
would be enlisted to report sightings of potential enemy aircraft, submarines
- even spies as they went about their daily tasks. Anyway, since Fox River,
Port Greville and Wards Brook area where my great grandparents Wesley and
Sophronia Vaughan were with the siblings of my grandfather Owen Vaughan
lived I was wondering if anyone knows of anyone who may have volunteered for
this in the area. Apparently they needed someone to look after an area of
approximately 7 by 8 miles per post, observer posts. Once they broke down
the areas they Air Detection Corps went about recruiting the various
observers therefore, we would of needed one in that area as well as the communities
were to far away from Parrsboro.
This is a story that would make an interesting addition to my story. Now I
know that my great grandfather Wesley wanted to be in the first War but
due to health issues wasn't able to so perhaps he may have volunteered. He
would of been older then so I don't know if they would of looked for younger
people only or not. Does anyone know about happenings like this in these
areas of Cumberland county.
Any information one has even if it my family wasn't directly involved would
be great as it would of been something that was still going on in the
local communities.
