I could be wrong but i am basing my theory on old Royal Navy ranking . some
one who had just joined without experience was an ordinary seaman . This was
indicated in written records as OS . An experienced sailor was rated as an
able bodied seaman or AB in written recoreds . In your case it would
indicate that they were experienced ships crew . Geoff
