Parrsboro's Past

To all, my best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

A short while ago, there was a question concerning the story of pirates, a fair maiden and a haunted cave near Parrsboro.

In the Oxford Journal of 6 Jan 2010 there is an item entitled "Crying Ghosts". The first paragraph does not elaborate any further on the pirate story, ie, no names, but I thought the second paragraph might be of interest to researchers. The item reads:

"At Black's Point, near Parrsboro, is Maiden's Cave. It's [sic] name is supposedly derived from a 1750's incident when a British ship was captured by pirates near the area. All on board except, of course, the captain's beautiful daughter, were made to walk the plank. The pirates were unable to control the uncooperative young woman, and after landing at Black's Point they decided to abandon her there. They placed her in a cave and sealed the entrance with a large stone essentially burying her alive. After hearing cries from inside the cave, some Mi'kmaq ventured near to investigate and remove the stone. They found only skeletal remains. The story goes that this poor woman still cries from her stony prison.

"In 1877 16-year-old Mary Harney of Rockley was sent out to gather up the family cows for milking. She was never seen again. Foul play was suspected in her disappearance, but no one was ever charged for her murder. It is said that on some evenings, in the community, the crying of a young girl can be heard along a nearby river."
