CHRISTIE, Dr. Hugh E. - 95, of Amherst passed away on Friday, January 8, 2010, in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Upper Nappan, with his loving wife and family by his side. Dr. Christie was a native of Amherst and was the son of the late Warren and Mary (Black) Christie. He graduated from Cumberland County Academy, Amherst, and attended Kings College as well as Dalhousie University, Halifax, receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1939. He then served two years as Resident Physician at the Nova Scotia Sanitarium, Kentville. Dr. Christie joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in 1941 and served as a Medical Officer with the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. He accompanied the assault troops on D-day in 1944 seeing continuous action in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was discharged from the Canadian Army with the rank of Major and returned from Europe in December of 1945. Dr. Christie then continued his studies and research in Toronto and Montreal at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Children's Memorial Hospital and McGill University, receiving his fellowship degree in 1949 from the Royal College of Physicians of Canada with a specialty in Internal Medicine. Dr. Christie returned to Amherst in 1949 as an Internist with special interest in heart disease. He was school physician and advisor at the Inter-provincial School for the Deaf for 20 years and served on the Board of Trustees of Highland View Regional Hospital, Amherst and was Chief of the medical staff until 1980. He retired from the active medical staff in 1996, having served for 47 years. Dr. Christie has been past president of the Amherst and Cumberland Medical Societies and also served on the Economics Committee of the Nova Scotia Medical Society and the Canadian Medical Association during the formative years of Medical Insurance Program (MSI). He has been a past member of Boards to Maritime Medical Care, Maritime Blue Shield, Blue Cross and the Spencer Nursing Home Moncton. He was past president of the St. Andrews Society of Amherst and an active member of the Amherst Rotary Club. Dr. Christie received the distinguished service Award from the Club in 1995. He was an Honorary Life Member and past president of the Maritime Seniors Golfers Association. He served on the Board of Management Trustees and Deacons, and a variety of committees of the First Baptist Church of Amherst. As a sportsman, he had a special interest in sailing, golf, curling, fishing, hunting and gardening. Dr. Christie will be lovingly remembered by his loving wife the former, Joan (Pavlovic) Spicer; stepchildren, Victoria (Mark) Melanson of Maccan, and Susan Pavlovic of Amherst; his nephews, David H. (Beryl MacDonald)) Christie,Amherst and Paul S. (Joan) Christie, Halifax; great nephew, Alex Christie and great-nieces, Meaghan, Julie and Allison Christie, as well as his four step grandchildren, Crystal, Greg, Kyle and Erin; three great stepgrandchildren, Kenedi, Brady and Chloe; stepdaughter in law, Debra Pettipas, Dartmouth. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, the former Charlotte Lusby; stepson, Anthony Pavlovic; sister, Janet S. Christie and brother, Charles B. Christie. His remains are resting in Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (667-9906) with visiting hours on Sunday, January 10 and Monday, January 11, from 7-9 p.m. (evenings only) with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 10 tribute service at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 12, at 2 p.m. from First Baptist Church, Amherst with Rev. Byron Corkum presiding. Burial will follow at a later date in the Amherst Cemetery. As an _expression_ of Sympathy, contributions can be made to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Foundation, L.A.
