MacALONEY, James W. - It is with great sorrow the MacAloney family announces the passing of their husband, father and grandfather, James W. MacAloney at home in Five Islands on Monday, December 28, 2009. Born in Five Islands in 1923, he was the son of the late Grace (MacAloney) Crawford and stepson of the late Frank Crawford. He was employed at Enheat Ltd. (now IMP Aerospace), Amherst for over 30 years. During his earlier years, he and his brother Hal operated a lumbering business with a portable sawmill working in Cumberland and Colchester Counties. He was a lifetime member of Peniel United Church where he was an elder of the church, member of the choir, the Cobequid Male Choir, and was Superintendent of the Sunday School. James was treasurer of the Five Islands Cemetery Company and a founding member of the Five Islands Volunteer Fire Department, Glooscap Festival and the Athletic Association. As a member of the Corinthian Lodge No. 63, Great Village, for over 60 years, he served as Master, Deputy Grand Master and Secretary for 25 years. In 2007 he received his 60 year jewel. He will be remembered by all of his friends and family as a great gardener, visitor and lover of politics. He was an avid baseball fan and attended many ball games including the Blue Jays World Series with his brothers, Hal and Purdy. One of his greatest joys was taking his family on their annual summer camping trip. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth (Corbett); daughters, Nancy MacAloney (Chris Melvin), East River; Betty Doyle (Paul), Lower Sackville; Margaret Davis (Lou), Truro; a son, Peter (Linda), Toronto; grandchildren, Jason and Matthew Davis; Patrick and Maghan Doyle; James, Liam and Spencer MacAloney; a brother, H. Purdy Crawford (Beatrice), Toronto, Ont.; sister-in-law, Katrina MacAloney, Bedford; many nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was predeceased by his brother, Haliburton. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, at Smith's Funeral Home, Parrsboro, where a Masonic service will take place 7 p.m. Wednesday. A celebration of James life will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Peniel United Church, Five Islands, Rev. Florence Antle-Brison officiating. Burial in the Five Islands Cemetery. MacAloney, Haliburton (Hal) J. - 83, Five Islands, passed away September 25, 2002 in the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Five Islands, August 24, 1919, he was the son of the late Grace (MacAloney) Crawford and stepson of the late Frank Crawford. He was employed at Enheat Ltd. (now IMP Aerospace), Amherst, for over 30 years and at the time of his retirement was Vice-President and General Manager of the Aircraft Division. During his earlier years, he and his brother James operated a lumbering business with a portable sawmill, working in Cumberland and Colchester Counties. He was a long time member of Peniel United Church volunteering in many capacities including over 30 years service as Chairman on the Board of Stewards. He enjoyed singing in the church choir and did so until his hospitalization in September. He loved his community of Five Islands and devoted himself to its many activities. He was Past Master of the Corinthian Lodge No. 63, Great Village, Grand Stewart of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia and received his 50 year jewel in 1999. He will be remembered by all of his friends and relatives as a great storyteller. He was an avid fan of the Toronto Blue Jays. His many interests included golf, traveling, cards, darts, bowling, gardening, music and politics. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Katrina (Spicer); a daughter, Donna (Douglas) Campbell, Bedford; three grandchildren, Lisa (Sean) Woodill, Geoff and Alyson Campbell; two brothers, James (Elizabeth) MacAloney, Five Islands and H. Purdy (Beatrice) Crawford, Toronto; many nieces, nephews and inlaws. Masonic Service at 7 p.m. Friday to be followed by visitation from 7-9 p.m. at Smith's Funeral Home, Parrsboro. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Peniel United Church, Five Islands, Rev. Robert Mack officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Peniel United Church, Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
