BEATON, Thomas Alexander - Aged 87 years, of High Crest Nursing Home, Springhill, passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2009, in High Crest. Born in Springhill, he was a son of the Late Murdock and Annie (Rushton) Beaton. He took great pride in his lawn and driveway and enjoyed working around his yard, ball games, music, playing cards, family, and friends. He is survived by his wife, the former Eleanor Raper; sons, David Beaton, Springhill and Tom (Micheline) Beaton, Upper Economy; daughters, Joanne White, Springhill and Mary-Lynn (Teddy Merry) Hurley, Salt Springs, Cumberland Co.; brother, Richard (Doris) Beaton, Springhill; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Thornton, Walter, Garnet, Elwood, Murdock and a brother in infancy; sisters, Rozie and Josephine. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, March 8, in A. H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill, from where the Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 9, with Major Max Snow officiating. Burial in Mapleton Cemetery, at a later date. If so desired, donations to a charity of choice would be appreciated.

HENWOOD, Thornton Winslow "Sut" - 88, Springhill, passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2001, at Gables Lodge, Amherst. Born in Springhill, he was a son of the late John and Annie (Rushton) Henwood. Most of his working years were spent in coal mining. He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Irene Mason Colwell. Sons, Ralph (Helen) and Harry (Joan), both of Springhill; two daughters, Mrs. Marilyn Michelson, Springhill; Mrs. Linda Harrison, eamington, Cumberland Co.; half-brothers, ****Thomas (Eleanor)**** and Richard (Doris), both of Springhill; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; stepdaughters, Mrs. Juanita Maddison, Springhill; Mrs. Pearl Rochon, New Glasgow; Mrs. Margaret Konschuk, Calgary; Mrs. Marion McLellan, Oxford; stepson, Alex Colwell, Calgary; several step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his first wife, the former Kathleen Margaret Embree; son, David; sister, Rozie Melanson; half-brothers, Walter, Elwood, Murdock and Garnet; half-sister, Josephine Fisher; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild. Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in the A.H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill, from where the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2001, The Reverend Elizabeth Davies officiating. SPRINGHILL - Murdoch James Beaton died at All Saints Hospital Thursday after a short illness. Born in Canaan, Cumberland County, 82 years ago, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Beaton. He resided in Springhill most of his life. He was a section hand and later was promoted to steam hoist operator with the Cumberland Railway and Coal Company. He retired in 1952. He was a member of the United Wesley Church. Besides his wife, the former Annie Rushton, he is survived by one daughter, Josephine (Mrs. Burrell Fisher), Springhill Junction; six sons, Walter, Garnet, Thomas, Richard, Elward, all of Springhill, and Murdoch, Dartmouth; and one step-son, ****Thornton Henwood, Springhill****. Funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the home on Athol Road with Rev. R.J. Miller officiating. Interment will be in Mapleton Cemetery. [Halifax Herald 06-April-1963]
