Cora,
The basic problem is that Vista operating system is incompatible with a lot of older software and hardware. Making them work became the responsibility of the manufacturers of software or hardware. Many companies have created patches for their software or new drivers for their hardware to allow them to communicate properly with Vista. Most manufacturers are not prepared to put much effort into writing the patches for their older software or hardware and are only providing patches for their relatively new versions. Family Tree maker has chosen to provide patches for versions newer than V11 (my previous e-mail indicated V11 was the oldest version with patches, but in fact V11 is the newest version for which no patch is available).
The problem is not just with Family Tree Maker. In my experience with going to Vista I also found the following:
My scanner did not work and was several years old and Canon did not have a patch. My external hard drive and it's backup software would not work and no patches available despite the fact it was only a few months old. Paint Shop Pro 6 was way too old for a patch. Other than the startup problems I have found Vista a good operating system.
This is only a guess as to what your problem with the help from ancestors.com. It may be that FTM was registered on the XP computer and it does not see your Vista one as a registered copy.
