OBITUARY: Mrs. Elizabeth S. Newcombe
Following an illness of two months, the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Sarah
Newcombe, widow of the late Edward Newcombe, occurred at All Saint's
Hospital on Friday, April 13th. She was 67 years of age. Mrs. Newcombe was
the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William B. Terris and was born in
Springhill on April 4th., 1889. She was educated in the local schools and
in later years became the bride of the late Edward Newcombe, who for many
years was a member of the local police force. He predeceased her on November
3rd., 1936. Surviving are four daughters and one son, Evelyn (Mrs. Leo
Thompson), Beatrice (Mrs. Gerald Spence), Joyce (Mrs. Alfred LaChambre),
Gladys (Mrs. James McNutt), and Donald, all of Springhill. Two sisters also
survive, Mrs. Charles Crawford of Springhill and Mrs. James Mitten of
Vancouver, B.C. Mrs. Newcombe was a faithful member of the Salvation Army
and the Baptist Women's Circle. Funeral services were held from the
Salvation Army Citadel on Monday, April 16th at 2:30 p.m., conducted by
Capt. George Heron who was assisted by Rev. F.H. Sinnott. The hymns sung by
the choir were: "Sweet Bye And Bye" and "In The Garden". Mrs. Frank Crawford
sang as a solo; "Good Evening Down Here And Good Morning Up There".
Interment was in Hillside Cemetery. Pallbearers were Messrs Frank Crawford,
Harold Crawford, Earl Ferris, Gerald Matthews, George Newcombe and Douglas
McMillan. Many beautiful floral tributes and cards testified to the love and
high esteem in which the deceased was held in the community.
