Obit: CANNING, Avis Bertha [WILLIAMS]

CANNING, Avis Bertha - 94, passed away peacefully in Oceanview Manor, Eastern Passage, on December 30, 2008. Born in Londonderry, she was the eldest daughter of the late Clarence and Ina (Mattatall) Williams. She is survived by daughters, Marilyn MacNeill (Larry), and Lorraine McCully (Glenn); granddaughters, Kathleen Holmes, Karen Maxwell, Janice MacDonald, Keltie MacNeill-Keller and Tricia Goguen; grandsons, John MacNeill, David Canning and Michael McCully; sister, Erma Patriquin (late Seldon); brother, Arnold (Dorothy); eight great-granddaughters and three great-grandsons; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Hedley; son, David; sisters, Blanche, Inez, Lalia and Geraldine; brothers, Vernon and John. Avis was a much loved, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt and friend to many. She will be remembered for her lovely welcoming smile, her many contributions to the community through Home and School Associations, Acadia Rebekah Lodge as Past Noble Grand, and District Deputy President, Colchester division of the Canadian Red Cross Society, Acadia United Church Ladies Aid, and adherent and treasurer of Acadia United Church, Londonderry. She was active in the Progressive Conservative Association of Nova Scotia and one of her proud moments was having her picture taken with the Hon. John Diefenbaker in the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young St., Truro, where Avis's family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today and where the funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 3, Rev. Gary MacDougall officiating. Spring Interment will be held in Hillcrest Cemetery, Londonderry. Her family is sincerely grateful to the caring staff of Mountbatten Manor and of Section B, Oceanview Manor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oceanview Manor Society, P.O. Box 130, Eastern Passage, N.S. B3G 1M4, or the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.

CANNING, David Russell - 62, Restigouche Hospital Centre, passed away peacefully Monday, June 23, 2008, in Campbellton Regional Hospital, Campbellton, N.B. Born April 17, 1946, in Truro, he was the son of Avis (Williams) Canning, Dartmouth and the late Hedley Canning. David began working with CNR at the age of 18, where he continued to work in various positions for the rest of his life, and retired from there in 2002. He was a member of Toastmasters in the Riverview/Moncton area. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed camping, biking and walking. He loved to sing and dance and also enjoyed reading, and fixing up and refurbishing antiques. Along with his mother, David is survived by his daughter, Tricia (Marc) Goguen, Lakeville-Westmorland, N.B.; son, David, Granisle, B.C.; stepgranddaughter, Brittany Pitre; sisters, Lorraine (Glenn) McCully, Dartmouth; Marilyn (Larry) MacNeill, Braeside, Ont. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, in Acadia Mines United Church, Londonderry, Nancy Corrigan, DM officiating. Interment in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reception to follow in The Old Schoolhouse. Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in David's memory to Canadian Mental Health Association are welcomed. CHISHOLM, Geraldine Mildred - 76, Sunny Brae, Pictou County, died October 29, 1994, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Londonderry, Colchester County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Ina (Mattatall) Williams. She was a resident of Sunny Brae for over 50 years. She was a member of Calvin Presbyterian Church, Sunny Brae and former employee of Claritone and Wear Well Garments. She is survived by daughters, Geraldine (Mrs. Robert Bennett), Sunny Brae; Elaine (Mrs. Simon Campbell), Plymouth; brothers, Vernon, British Columbia; Arnold, Green Hill; sisters, Avis Canning, Erma Patriquin, both of Londonderry; seven grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, J. Ross; daughters, Barbara Ann, Sylvia Isabell in infancy; brother, John; sister, Lalia Lawson. Funeral will be 2 p.m. today in Calvin Presbyterian Church, Sunny Brae, Rev. Waldon Moase officiating. Burial will be in Sunny Brae Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the palliative care unit of Aberdeen Hospital, Calvin Presbyterian Church or any charity. Arrangements are under the direction of H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
