Obit: MacDOUGALL, Gerald Francis Henley
MacDOUGALL, Gerald Francis Henley - 92 of Amherst, passed away on Sunday, December 28, 2008, in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Upper Nappan. Born in Amherst on January 10, 1916, he was a son of the late Hugh and Annie (Flaherty) MacDougall. Gerald was a veteran of the Second World War, going overseas in 1942 to help maintain aircraft. He came back to Canada in 1946, where he married his beloved wife, Evelyn, and began working as a guard in Dorchester. Upon completion of his surveyor training at Lawrencetown, he worked at M.M.R.S. until 1960. Gerald then received employment with the Department of Transportation and Public Works until his retirement in 1981. He was an avid sportsman and bridge player as he was one of the first Amherst players to become a life master. He was also a curler who always found time to appear year after year at the Monctonian Bonspiel. He was also inducted into the Nova Scotia Legion Curling Hall of Fame. He was a past president of the Nova Scotia Branch of the Royal Caledonian Curling Association. Gerald was on the board at Amherst Golf Club and ran the Cumberland/Westmorland Senior Golf League for many years. He is survived by his children, Dawna Ferguson of Abbotsford, B.C.; Paul and Ian (Anne) both of Amherst; as well as his sister, Marjorie (the late, Ronald) Coates of Owen Sound, Ont.; granddaughter, Jo-Anne; five great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and extended family. Gerald was predeceased by his wife, the former Evelyn Pauline Ash; sisters, Helena Langille, and Fidelis (Norman MacDougall) MacDougall; as well as his brothers, Bernard, Roy, and Jim. By request of the family there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (902-667-9906), a private family service will be held at a later date. Should family and friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. www.campbells-amherst.ca
