FOWLER, Donald Earl – 83, Yarmouth, passed away at the Yarmouth
Hospital, on Friday, November 28, 2008. Born Sept. 19, 1925 in
Springhill, he was the son of the late Orrin and Bertina Mae Fowler.
Donald's varied career began at the Cumberland Railway and Coal
Company in Springhill. Determined to continue his education, he would
study nights and weekends until he became one of the first persons in
the province to obtain a First Class Stationary Engineer Certificate.
He also taught engineering students at "night school" and tutored
many stationary engineer students. In 1957, Don and his family moved
to Sackville, N.B. where he was employed as a shift engineer in the
power plant at Mount Allison University. His final move with his
family was in 1961 to Yarmouth, N.S., where he began his position of
Director of Engineering for the Yarmouth Hospital. In his 27 years
there, Donald's responsibilities increased as the hospital expanded
to include a new nursing school, Tidal View Manor, Harbour Side
Lodge, and the Diagnostic Centre. He retired from the Yarmouth
Regional Hospital in 1988. Donald enjoyed community participation
over the years and he shared his expertise as a board member of the
YMCA, as chair of the Building Committee for the YMCA Centennial
Pool, and on the advisory board of the Villa St. Joseph Du Lac. He
was a member of Beacon United Church. He achieved a lifetime
membership in the Yarmouth Lions Club. Donald is survived by his wife
Kathleen (Winters) with whom he shared 65 years of life. She was the
love of his life and he always credited her with any successes they
shared. He is also survived by his son, Michael (Olga) and daughter,
Sandra (William Foster), seven grandchildren – Jenny, Sarah, Lila
(Derek), Brian (Karen), Colin, Jillian and David, and one great
grandchild, Claire. His family share lots of warm memories of "Grampy
Don" and we will miss him in our lives. A memorial service to
celebrate his life will be held Tuesday, December 2nd at 2 pm from
Sweenys Funeral Chapel, Yarmouth. Rev. A.D. Bill Newell officiating.
Spring internment will be in the Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery.
