I have him as Frederick Cecil Smith, b 1933. His brother Lorne C Smith has been a longstanding member of the nscumber list. I wish to extend my sincere condolences to Lorne and his family on the loss of their brother, father, grandfather at this time. - Eric

SMITH, Fred - The death of Fred Smith, age 75, of Southampton, occurred in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Sunday, November 23, 2008. Born in Athol, he was a son of the late Lorne and Mildred (Canning) Smith. A radar technician, he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force for five years. Following his military career, he worked on the Distant Early Warning (DEW Line) for over 40 years, as site manager serving in various locations in the Canadian Arctic. After retirement, he lived in Southampton volunteering on the Cumberland County Health Board, was a member of the Southampton United Church and sang with the "Travellers". Fred frequently volunteered his time and vehicle driving those in need of transportation to medical care, often travelling as far away as Halifax and Moncton. Fred will be long remembered and sadly missed by daughter, Kimberley, Lubbock, Tex.; sons, Darrell (Heather), Winnipeg, Man., and Lorne (Pamela), Hammonds Plains; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Adams, Southampton; Evelyn (Ken) MacKay, Eramosa, Ont.; Karen (David) Dickinson, Westbrook; brothers, Earle (Barb), Grand Prairie, Alta.; Johnson (Shirley), Salisbury, N.B.; Lorne C., Parrsboro; Richard (Bev), Kitscoty, Alta.; Eric (Lucille), Sweaburg, Ont.; and Leslie (Joy), Granville Ferry. He was predeceased by his wife, Jessie (Rector), in 2004. Fred's remains have been cremated under the direction of Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Amherst (902-667-8777). A memorial service will be held in Southampton in the summer of 2009. Burial in Southampton Cemetery. SMITH, Jessie Augusta - 70, Southampton, passed away Friday, April 2, 2004, in Cumberland Regional Health Care Center. Born in Springhill, Jessie was a daughter of the late Leslie and Eunice (Sherriff) Rector. Jessie loved collecting Angels and playing bingo. She is survived by her husband, Fred; daughter, Kimberly Deckelman (James), Lubbock, Tex.; (a niece whom she also raised) Shirley Faulkner (Grant), Bishopville; sons, Darrell (Heather), Winnipeg; Lorne (Pamela), Halifax; (a nephew whom she also raised) Robert Tennant, Ontario; sisters, Florence, Parrsboro; Kathleen (Charlie), Warren; brothers, Donald (Irmagard), Hanover, Germany; Utley (Zenith), Parrsboro; Clifford, Southampton; Simpson-Miles, Amherst; James (Jane), Newmarket, Ont.; half-sister, Louella, Moncton; grandchildren, Nicole, Alissia, Hunter, Aidan and Dolfin. Besides her parents, Jessie was predeceased by sister, Francis; half-brothers, Ross and Mickey. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will be held in Southampton United Church on Monday, April 5, at 2 p.m., Rev. Danny Compton officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church basement. Spring burial will take place in West Brook Cemetery.
