Obituary:
Elderkin, Frederick J. - 71, Wolfville, died suddenly May 6, 2000, at his
summer cottage at Black River Lake, Kings County. Son of the late Alice
(Morris) and Lloyd Elderkin, he was born in Truro and spent most of his
early years in Advocate Harbour, Cumberland Co. He is survived by his wife,
Ruth Loretta (Clarke); son, Mark, Wolfville; daughters, Marilyn Salle and
Cheryl Field, both of Barriere, B.C.; grandchildren, Garrett, Jeremy, Kyle
and Carrie Field, all of Barriere, B.C. He was predeceased by half-brothers,
James Elderkin, Morris Elderkin and Newman Elderkin; sister, ***Joan
Elderkin***; half-sister, Victoria Morrissey, Moncton, N.B.; sister, Ruby
Elderkin, Ottawa. After working with Richardson's Securities in Saint John,
N.B. between 1946 and 1952, he came to Wolfville where he served in the
capacity of bursar and chief financial officer at Acadia University between
1952 and 1959. He later served as business manager and treasurer (1959-67)
and between 1967 and 1983 as vice president of administration at Acadia.
During his work with Acadia, he was involved in the expansion of residences,
libraries, other buildings on campus and served as President of the Canadian
Association of Business Officers (1963-64), was an honorary member of the
graduating class of 1970 and became a member of the Honor Society of the
Acadia Students Union in 1972. After taking early retirement from the
university following 31 years of service he became chief administrative
officer of Eastern Kings Memorial Hospital, Wolfville until 1993. He
provided initiative and leadership in receiving approval from the Department
of Health for developing the first Ambulatory Surgery Centre in Eastern
Canada, in cooperation with Valley Health Services. He served on various
committees of the Nova Scotia Hospital Association and the Regional Division
of the Association. His commitment to volunteer work started in his early
years and continued throughout his life and included work with the Boy
Scouts of Canada, Children's Aid Society, Kings County; Canadian Council of
Christians and Jews (former director of Atlantic Canada), Acadia Institute,
Fundy Mental Health Center, Wolfville School Board (chair, 1967, 1968),
Wolfville Rotary Club (former president and director), the Baptist
Foundation of the Atlantic Provinces (former vice chairman chair of
Investment Committee), the Nova Scotia Association of Health Organizations
and Board of Governors of the Nova Scotia Museum. His dedication and
lifelong achievements in voluntary community work were recognized by the
Wolfville Rotary Club when he was awarded the distinguished Paul Harris
Fellowship in 1998. He was a member of the Wolfville Baptist Church and over
the years served in various voluntary capacities there including chairman of
the Board of Trustees and Board of Management. Cremation has taken place.
Visitation with the family will take place on Tuesday, May 9, between 2-4,
7-9 p.m. in H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, Wolfville. A memorial service will
take place on May 10, Wednesday, in Wolfville Baptist Church at 2 p.m., Rev.
Dr. Das Sydney officiating. Burial in the Willowbank Cemetery, Wolfville. In
lieu of flowers, donations may be made to charity of choice.
