OBITUARY: James Hemmington Smith
The death of James Hemmington Smith occurred at his home in Diligent River
on Thursday, April 28th after several months of illness. Eighty-seven years
of age, he was the son of the late John T. Smith and Phoebe Williams Smith
of Diligent River and resided his lifetime in the home where he was born. A
farmer and Mill Surveyor, the late Mr. Smith was one of the most esteemed
residents of the district. He was the last surviving member of a family of
eleven. He is survived by three sons, Clarence and Ronald residing at home;
Russell, also of Diligent River; and one daughter, (Kathleen) Mrs. Roland
Spicer who also resided with her father and cared for him during his illness
as she had cared for her mother who passed away two years ago after many
years of ill health. There are also two grandsons, the children of Mr. and
Mrs. Russell Smith. The largely attended funeral service, conducted by Rev.
J.W. Barbour, pastor of Trinity United Church in Parrsboro, was held from
the late residence in Diligent River on Sunday afternoon. The choir sang the
hymns: "In The Sweet Bye And Bye", "Abide By Me" and "Jesus Keep Me Near The
Cross", all favorites of the deceased. The pallbearers were his neighbours
and close friends, James Leslie, Charles Hiltz, Lester Spicer, Clayton
Graham, Layton Yorke and Blair Graham. Interment was made in the family lot
in the Methodist Cemetery at Wharton.
