Obit: SMITH, Adolphus H. "Al"

SMITH, Adolphus H. "Al" - It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Adolphus "Al" H. Smith on October 6, 2007, in his 89th year, at home in Dartmouth. Born in Parrsboro, he was the son of the late Brenton J. and Mildred J. (Taggart) Smith. Al grew up in Cumberland County and joined the Merchant Marine at the age of 18, sailing the Atlantic and Caribbean Sea. He remained in the Merchant Navy until 1941 when he joined the Royal Canadian Navy. While home during the war he met his future bride, Mary Jane "Mamie", and they were married in 1943. Al remained in the navy until 1945. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Atlantic Star, The Canadian Volunteer Service medal with Clasp, and the 1939-45 War Medal for his service. The following year he began work at the Halifax Shipyards. In 1952 he joined the Department of National Defense Fire Services and worked as a fireman both at the dockyard and at Shearwater retiring in 1979 after 27 years of loyal service. In 1967 the family moved to Dartmouth. Al enjoyed playing cards, was a member of the Centennial Branch Legion, a member of Keith's No. 17 Masonic Lodge, and a Kiwanis Club member. He will be sadly missed by his faithful companion, his Pomeranian Sabre. He is survived by his beloved children, Shirley (John) Richardson, Owen Sound, B.C.; Audrey (Gord) Gelineau, Winnipeg, Man.; Marilyn (Murray) Lee, Dartmouth; Dawn (Marcel) Morin, Windsor, Ont.; Donald (Vivian) Smith, Barry (Christine) Smith, Joyce (John) Larkins, all of Dartmouth; brothers, Russell, Lloyd, Floyd Smith; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Mary Jane (Bourgeous); brothers, Harley, Everett, Lawson, Stewart, Fred; sisters Ethel, Hilda, Jessie, Eva, Laura. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Wednesday from 7-9, memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, October 11, all in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, Rev. Patricia Malin officiating. Burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens, with a reception to be held in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or S.P.C.A.
