Two die in car rollover near Amherst, victims not belted in
In Pictou County, crash injures five
By DEBORAH MENSAH-BONSU | 4:59 AM
Two people are dead and two others were in critical condition after separate motor vehicle accidents in Cumberland and Pictou counties on Sunday.
Two men in their 20s were killed in a single-vehicle rollover when they were ejected from the car, which was travelling eastbound on the Tyndal Road section of Highway 366 outside East Amherst.
Emergency Health Services got the call at 3:35 a.m. and dispatched two ambulances.
"It was a pretty serious accident," spokesman Paul Maynard said. Two of the five occupants of the car were dead when paramedics arrived, he said.
"We assessed three other people at the scene . . . but they were all very minor injuries."
One ambulance cleared out immediately and the other remained for about an hour, he said. The Amherst fire department was also on scene.
Amherst RCMP said the driver was treated at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Upper Nappan and released. They said that the two men who died in the crash were not wearing their seatbelts.
Less than 12 hours later, at about 3:30 p.m., five ambulances and one helicopter responded to a two-vehicle collision at Highway 6 and James MacKay Road in Toney River.
One victim in critical condition was transported by helicopter to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. Five other people were taken to Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow. One was listed in critical condition, another in serious condition and the other three as fair.
Police and fire crews were also on the scene.
"There obviously was some extraction that had to take place there," said Mr. Maynard. "Probably something would have been cut out of the vehicles."
No names have been released and police are investigating both crashes.
