I also see as an extremely capable gentleman of the times. I did not mean to cast aspersions on any of the Desbarres descendants but I do believe that JFWD was also a man of character in his 102 years of living.
As to Mr Bird's "An Earl Must Have A Wife", I have read it and would suggest that it is "based on a true story". JFWD never did marry the quite capable Mary in the end. ;->
