COVE, Leonce Susan - 103, Ansonia, Conn., U.S.A., passed away on May 6, 2005, at her home. Born in Claremont, Cumberland Co., on April 29, 1902, she was a daughter of the late R. Morton and Alice Maude (Doyle) Cove (Claremont and River Philip). Educated in Glenville and Springhill schools, she taught school for two years before going to the United States in 1920 to train as a nurse at the Griffin Hospital School of Nursing in Ansonia, Conn. Graduating in 1923, she was one of the first registered nurses to be graduated by that hospital. Following graduation, she did private duty nursing for 43 years most of which was for Howard and Ella Emmerson of Ansonia, Conn. She was a long-time member of the Immanuel St. James Episcopal Church of Derby, Conn., and was active in the women's service league. She also volunteered at the Griffin Hospital Thrift Shop. She was a member of the Derby Historical Society and the Derby Senior Center. In honour of her 100th birthday, a resting bench was given by friends and family to the Healing Garden of the Griffin Hospital commemorating her kindness, devotion, dedication and compassion. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by an infant sister, Faye, in 1898. She is survived by several cousins, many of whom reside in the Cumberland County area of Nova Scotia. Leonce retained close ties with her family and relatives in Nova Scotia, visiting her parents every summer and during the Christmas season. Even after the death of her parents, she continued to regularly visit friends and relatives until after she was 90 years of age. Her remains have been cremated at her request. A memorial service was held in Immanuel St. James Episcopal Church, Derby, Conn., on May 18, attended by cousins, Mildred Fraser of Springhill and Craig Dickson and his wife, Margaret of Moncton, N.B. A second memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 12, at 4 p.m. in A.H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill, with Craig Dickson and Rev. Heber Colbourne officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot in Glenville Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the memorial of the donor's choice.
