Obit: HARRISON, W Douglas
HARRISON, W. Douglas - 84, Amherst, passed away Sunday, July 2, 2006, in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan. Born in Saint John, N.B., he was a son of the late James Arthur and Edith Vera (Cronk) Harrison. Doug worked for Canada Customs in Vancouver for 10 years and in Amherst for 25 years. He was a veteran of the Second World War where he served with the 5th Armoured Division in Italy and Northwest Europe. Doug was an avid golfer and Past President of the Amherst Golf Club. During his 55 years of playing golf, he recorded six holes-in-one and also won the five Amherst Golf Club Men's Club Championships and in 1963 he won the Amherst Invitational Tournament. He was also successful on a Provincial Level as well, in 1991, he was low net winner in the Nova Scotia Golf Association Senior Championship 70 and over division. In 1996 Doug was inducted as an Amherst Sports Legend at the Amherst Sports Awards Banquet for his golfing accomplishments. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Doug is survived by son, Paul (Linda), Amherst; and grandchildren, Krista, Toronto; Meagan, Fredericton, and Matthew and Justin, at home. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Adelaide Elizabeth Mitchell; and sisters, Ruth Dever and Alice Audrey, in infancy. Cremation has taken place. His family will receive visitors in Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst today from 7-9 p.m. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 10, Amherst will hold their tribute service at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 5, at 11 a.m. in Christ Church, Amherst with Archdeacon Glenn Eason officiating. Interment will follow in Christ Church Cemetery. Donations in Doug's memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice. www.campbells-amherst.ca
