Obit: BURNS, Hedley Clark

BURNS, Hedley "Clark" - 89, Sandi's Home For Seniors, Truro, passed away in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, May 19, 2006. Clark was born July 19, 1916, the youngest son of the late J. Hedley and Mary (Patterson) Burns (Lower Shinimicas, Cumberland Co.). He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Clark grew up on the family farm, and as a teenager was involved with the 4-H Club. One of the highlights of his early life was a trip west in 1933 to participate in the World Grain Exhibition and Conference in Regina, Sask. He married Genevieve Goodwin of Lorneville in 1944, and they settled on the farm. Though he survived polio, his continuing poor health made it necessary to leave the farm and move to the Truro/Bible Hill area in 1956. Clark was employed by Margolian's and the Fuller Brush Co. He took courses in his spare time and studied to become an insurance agent spending 30 years as a leading agent for Mutual Life of Canada, now Clarica/Sun Life. Throughout his life, one of Clark's greatest passions was music. He was a self-taught banjo and guitar player who enjoyed sharing his love of music by playing with his many musical friends. He was often called upon to accompany other musicians and singers, and to entertain at various functions and dances. Clark and Gen were avid RV'ers and took their travel trailer on weekend outings throughout Nova Scotia, and on several long trips through the United States and western Canada. They were enthusiastic square dancers and were long-time members of the Cobequid Twirlers. Clark was very involved in his community as an active long-time member of the Kiwanis Club and a generous supporter of the United Church of Canada. He had a great spirit for living and leaves to mourn many friends of all ages and walks of life. He is survived by his daughters, Peggy Carpenter, Florida; Sheila (Frank) Johnson, Alberta; Judy (Mike) Dickie, Saskatchewan; Gloria (Barrie Walker) Burns, British Columbia; and Mary, Truro. Clark is also survived by his long-time companion, Eleanor Starratt, and close friend, Myrna Ferguson, both of Truro. Clark was predeceased by his wife, Genevieve; son, Leonard; two infant sons; brother, Ross, and two infant brothers; sisters, Mabel, Sara, Elizabeth, and one in infancy; son-in-law, Ken Carpenter. Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 24, from 7-9 p.m. with a memorial service to celebrate Clark's life Thursday, May 25, at 1 p.m., both in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro with Rev. Ebbie Snow officiating. Interment will follow in Northport Cemetery, Northport. In lieu of flowers, donations in Clark's memory may be made to St. David's United Church, Colchester Regional Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice. On-line condolences may be sent to: colchestercommunityfh@...
