CUMMINGS (nee Allen), Jennie Louise

CUMMINGS (nee Allen), Jennie Louise - 88, Pugwash, passed away March 26, 2003, in East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash. Born in Bayside, N.B., she was a daughter of the late Mariner "Mane" and Hattie (Polley) Allen. She became well-known in the community, having operated "Cummings Canteen" from 1968-1983 and she owned and managed several rental properties in the village of Pugwash. She was a member of Wesley St. Matthew's United Church and U.C.W., Pugwash, where she taught Sunday school for several years as well. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Silver Spray 1, Pugwash, for over 60 years. Jennie was a very giving individual, having been a foster parent for many years, helping by her own estimates over 30 children. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending time in the outdoors. Surviving are daughters, Sherry (Steve Arkens), Pugwash; Vonda (Phillip) McInturff, Cape Cod; son, Jim (Shirley), Burlington, Ont.; grandchildren, Jodi, Steve, Jeff, Mark, Daniel, Shea and Cheyenne; great-grandsons, Andrew and Tim; sisters, Stella (Ormand) Smith, Port Elgin; Dolly (Alton) Trenholm, Moncton; Kathleen Simpson, Saint John, N.B.; brothers, Kencil Allen, Aubrey (Lola) Allen, Alvin Allen, all of Port Elgin, N.B.; Oakley (Lorna) Allen, Moncton; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Aubrey; brothers, Wilson and Ernest; sister, Cora Zwicker. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Friday, with Rebekah tribute at 7 p.m. Friday, funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, all in Mundle's Funeral Home, Pugwash, Rev. Danny Compton officiating. Burial will be in Palmerston Cemetery at a later date. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, East Cumberland Lodge or a charity of choice.
