BEATTIE, Joseph Henry "Joe" - 85, Collingwood, passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2005, in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late George and Agnes (Chapman) Beattie. He served on a navy Corvette as leading telegrapher from 1938 to 1945. He and his family moved to Collingwood in 1969. Joe worked for Lands and Forest Oxford for 35 years, the last 10 as a supervisor. He was an avid woodsman and a lover of nature. He was a member of the Amherst Fish and Game Association and taught hunter safety for many years. Joe was involved with the Amherst Minor Hockey Association in the 60's. He was a former Cub leader for the 1st Amherst Cubs and then a Scout leader in Collingwood. He was a member and past Noble Grand of the I.O.O.F. Ivy Lodge No. 35, Collingwood United Church, and a volunteer fireman for the Collingwood Fire Department where he had served as a former Fire Chief. Joe is survived by his wife, the former Bernice Murphy; daughters, Beth Beattie, Iqaluit, N.W.T.; Cathryn Beattie-Saunders (Brian), Ireland; sons, William (Darlene), Bruce (Lori), both of Oxford; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister, Rhoda Burgess; brothers, Jack and Norman. Family will receive visitors Friday, September 9, from 2-4 p.m. in Furlong's Funeral Home, Amherst. A memorial service will be held in Cumberland Memorial Chapel on Saturday, September 10, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Ruth Gamble officiating. Burial will take place in Amherst Cemetery.
