Re: BROWN, Stats from Chignecto POST Index

Diane and other Brown's,

At a Brown family reunion in 2000 in Hants County (descendants of Paul, my grandfather, and Hugh his brother, who came to Hants Co from Cumberland in the early 1900's) I had about an hour to look at a book belonging to Bliss Brown (a descendant of Elijah and Henrietta's son Elijah) and copied some notes from it, which is where I first saw James' name as the father of the first Elijah. James' birth date was July 11, 1745, death in 1817, married to Ann Brown--don't know if we're fortunate enough to have another Brown line here or not! and residence given as Machias, Maine. His parents were Samuel b January 20, 1720 and Mary Philbrick, born January 25, 1723--she died at the age of 33 years.

Now people, I don't know if Bliss Brown believed this to be Elijah's line, and I have no proof of it. This line of James' goes back to Fordell in Scotland. I tried to find a copy of the book, which is called Genealogy of John Brown (of Hampton, New Hampshire), author Marguerite Willette Brown, of Salisbury, Mass. Published by Hillside Publishing Co of Amesbury, Mass in 1977 and printed by the Royal Press of Manchester, New Hampshire. Hillside Publishing was not listed in the phone directory of 2000. I was able to find out that the Library of Congress has a copy of the book and for 40 cents US per page (400 pages in the book) they would gladly copy it for me. I haven't decided yet to do that. I'm keeping an eye on the rate of exchange....

As far as I'm concerned, Bliss Brown is the expert on Elijah Brown's descendants but I really do not know if he believes the above named James to be the father of Elijah from New Canaan. In any case, James didn't come to Nova Scotia as far as I know.

Downtown Stewiacke looks just about like Downtown Shinimicas this morning.
