Brick walls and missing items

I was unable to put up my Xmas wish list before the holidays but there is two things with which someone out there might be able to help me.

(1) Miner Canning (name may be John Miner Canning) b ca 1854 appears as a 17yo in the 1881 census, then vanishes. Rumours abound that he went to the US but no one seems to know where (it's a big country too!) but New England is a likely destination. He was the son of John Albert Canning (1830-1900) and Christianna Harrison (1831-1916). Miner's brother Harry took his family to Braintree, MA about 1908 and family that I've been in touch with there have no knowledge of Miner.
Additionally, descendents of his other brother Lovell (here in Moncton) also don't remember Miner.

(2) Another Canning family (Miner's uncle) Micheal Canning, son of William Cannon & Fanny Atkinson "went out west and had a family there" according to David Jenks Taylor's notes. Taylor also notes that it was an accident involving Michael that cost Taylor an eye as a young boy. Again, I have no knowledge of where Michael Canning and family settled but I'd love to track his descendents down. Michael was born in 1824 and was still alive in late 1900 when his two brothers (John & Isaac) died.
