I'm also curious about the identity of Mary Higgins,
but never took the time to try to solve the mystery
(she's the 2nd great grandmother of my Aunt Margaret -
nee Johnson). So I took a second look at the family
which I've listed below.
Matthew Ash Johnson, son of Matthew Johnson and Ann
Ash, was born 24 Nov 1787 at River Philip. He married
Mary Higgins on 17 Jun 1804 at River Philip. They had
thte following children:
1. Nelly Hollis Johnson was born on 16 May 1805 at
River Philip
2. Mary Johnson was born on 19 Jul 1807 at River
Philip
3. Cynthia Oxley Johnson was born on 26 Oct 1810 at
River Philip
4. Jonathan Weatherbee Johnson was born on 21 Dec 1815
at River Philip
5. Sarah Ann Johnson was born on 14 May 1818 at River
Philip
6. Hannah Higgins Johnson was born on 21 May 1821 at
River Philip
7. Amos Page Johnson was born on 09 Aug 1824 at River
Philip
As with Matthew Ash Johnson, the children's names
appear to incorporate "surnames" found in other Nova
Scotia familes (i.e. Hollis, Oxley, Weatherbee,
Higgins). So naturally I looked into my Weatherbee
family tree and came up with the possibility that
"Mary Higgins" may have been related to Jemima Polly.
There's still no conclusive proof, but perhaps the
information below may offer you and other listers some
leads.
Jemima Polly, daughter of John Polly and Jemima
-Unknown-, was born about 1747 at Malden,
Massachusetts Colony and died 18 Feb 1851 at River
Philip, Nova Scotia. She married (1) Samuel Whippe in
Feb 1767 at Onslow, Nova Scotia, but he died in
1767/68 and they had no children. Jemima did have a
son, Barnabus Collins O'Brien, who was born on 01 Apr
1770 at Onslow and the father is not known.
Jemima then married Jonathan Higgins, son of Jonathan
Higgins and Rachel Doane, in 1770/71. Jonathan was
born 20 Apr 1736 at Harwick, Massachusetts Colony, and
died about 1783. They had the the following children:
1. Nathan Higgins was born on 22 Dec 1771 at Onslow
and died 20 Jun 1772 at Onslow.
2. Sarah Higgins was born on 25 Oct 1773 at Onslow.
She married Richard Hollis on 04 Jul 1793 and their
children range from 1794 to 1810.
3. John Higgins was born on 09 Nov 1775 at Onslow and
died 12 Nov 1832 at Onslow. He married Hannah Stevens
on 11 May 1802. Their children range from 1802 to
1826.
4. Jane Higgins was born on 23 Sep 1778 at Onslow. No
further information.
5. Mercy Higgins was born on 28 Dec 1780. Further
details about her are listed further below.
6. Rachel Higgins was born on 25 Apr 1782 at Onslow.
No further information.
After the death of Jonathan Higgins, Jemima married
Jonathan Weatherby, son of Samuel Weatherby and Ruth
-Unknown-, on 01 Apr 1784 at Onslow. Jonathan
Weatherby was born about 1764 in Nova Scotia (area of
present day Westmorland Co., NB) and died 18 Feb 1851
at River Philip. I have only 2 sons, William and
Timothy Weatherbee, listed for this marriage.
As for Mercy Higgins, Jemima's daughter from Jonathan
Higgins, she married Nathan Weatherbee, son of Samuel
Weatherby and Ruth -Unknown-, in Jan 1799 at Onslow.
Mercy is listed as Mary in the Onslow Township Books
and they had a daughter named Sarah Jane Hollis
Weatherbee who was born about 1804 at Onslow. Mercy
cannot be the "Mary Higgins" who married Matthew Ash
Johnson as children are listed up to 1819.
A bit of extra info that probably doesn't apply:
Nathaniel Weatherbee, son of Samuel Weatherby and Ruth
-Unknown-, was born 16 Jun 1774 at Onslow. He married
Elizabeth Burgis Higgins, daughter of Philip Higgins
and Mary Crowell, on 05 Jun 1795. Elizabeth was born
23 Dec 1779 at Onslow.
So all that I have are the families of Jemima with
alot of similar names, within the general date range
and that she eventually ended up in River Philip. Is
it possible that daughters Jane or Rachel may have
been the "Mary Higgins" that married Matthew Johnson?
Or perhaps there was another daughter that did not get
recorded in the Onslow Township Book.
